First, make a business plan. Your business plan will serve as a roadmap to get started and develop your new business. Writing this plan will help you decide what your goals and identify the strategies that you need to achieve your goals.

Then, register your legal business name. Check with your local county clerks office. If your business wiil be set to be a sole proprietorship, you only need to register your company in the county office and file a ” Doing Business As ” ( DBA)  form for a small fee.

Next, open a business banking account. You need to bring your DBA form to the bank so they can open a checking account for your business.

After that, you need to buy your photographic equipment. The equipment you need depends on your budget, space availability and the type of shoot that you will be doing. It is always better to start small and add equipment, as needed. For your office, you need a computer, phone, fax, scanner, office furniture, and others.

After the above steps are complete, you have to finalize supply and photo lab arrangements. If you will long time in this business, you need to develop a relationship with film, processing and equipment suppliers. Select a very good photo lab, if you won’t be developing your business yourself. The photo lab that you have been decide to use can make or break your business. The quality of your work, ability to meet an important deadline, and the ability to get a complex  order correct varies from one laboratory to the next photo. Ask around and try some out before you choose one that you will use on a regular basis.
